    Dunno about carpets, but if HVAC system is properly installed & regularly maintained - it won't be causing any hazard. If smbdy has troubles finding qualified contractors - see this page. I asked these guys to plan, install & maintain my residential AC & I'm feeling good for years! No any breathing troubles were ever mentioned, and the air in the house is fresh all the time.
